Famco Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Damper Repair: The Chester Owner’s Guide

We stock Famco-compatible damper parts on the truck and install them throughout Chester, with most repairs running $195 to $425 installed depending on model and what’s actually failed. Most Chester owners discover the problem the same way: a draft that won’t quit, a damper handle that spins without grabbing, or smoke backing into the room on a cold start. You don’t need a full rebuild because of one worn plate or a failed cable. You need the right part matched to your existing Famco housing, installed straight the first time, and that’s exactly what we do.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco dampers come in a handful of series, and the part that fits one won’t always fit another. The most common units we see in Chester homes are the top-sealing and throat-mount damper lines, each with different plate diameters, cable lengths, and mounting hardware. If your damper plate has a stamped code or a label inside the frame, snap a photo before you call. If it doesn’t, we match by measuring the flue opening and the plate itself, because a quarter-inch difference in plate width is the difference between a tight seal and a whistle you’ll hear on every windy night.

You’ll find both OEM Famco parts and quality aftermarket equivalents in circulation. For cables and handles, we generally recommend OEM or a direct equivalent. For damper plates, a well-made aftermarket plate with the right gauge and the right seating ring can work just as well and cost less. The honesty matters here because this isn’t a zone where you guess. If a part won’t seat right in your housing, no amount of adjusting makes it right.

One thing worth saying plainly: Top Hat Chimney is an independent service provider. We install and repair Famco dampers, but we’re not affiliated with Famco, and we won’t pretend otherwise.

Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing

  • The handle spins freely without resistance. The cable has separated from the plate or the pivot pin has worn through. This is the single most common failure we see in Chester homes where the damper gets opened and closed daily during burning season.
  • Smoke rolls into the room on startup. The plate isn’t opening fully, usually because soot and creosote have gummed the pivot or the cable has stretched just enough to leave the plate half-closed. It looks like a draft problem. It’s a damper problem.
  • A cold draft pours down the chimney even with the damper closed. The plate is warped, the seating ring is cracked, or the gasket edge has flattened out. In Chester’s damp winters, metal plates cycle through enough temperature swings to warp slightly over five to seven years.
  • You hear a rattle or clank inside the flue on windy days. That’s metal on metal and it usually means the plate isn’t seating flush against the frame. Left alone, it only gets louder, and the plate edges start chewing into the seating surface.
  • The cable or chain has visible kinks, fraying, or rust. A frayed cable can snap without warning and drop the plate shut mid-fire. If you see rust bloom on the cable, plan the repair before you need it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For most Chester homes, a Famco damper repair lands between $195 and $425 installed. The spread comes down to three things: which series you have, whether it’s a cable and handle replacement or a full plate and seating ring swap, and how hard the access is inside your firebox. A simple cable replacement on an accessible throat-mount damper runs at the low end. A warped top-sealing plate that requires work from the roof pushes toward the high end.

Your price is quoted before a single tool comes off the truck, and the number you hear on the phone is the number on the invoice. Every repair includes a camera check of the seating surface so you see exactly what’s fixed and exactly what doesn’t need touching. If it’s not done right, our 90-Day Done Right Promise means one call brings Wendell Pike and the crew back at no additional cost. And if the damper is still functional but just needs adjustment, we’ll tell you that before we sell you any parts.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check the obvious things: whether the handle moves the cable, whether the plate is visibly warped or rusted through, and whether you can see daylight around the plate edges when it’s closed. But the repair itself is not a weekend project. The damper sits above the firebox, the cable runs through a channel you can’t always see, and a plate that drops mid-repair can do real damage to the firebox floor or to you. Couple that with working inside a flue that holds creosote and soot, and it’s a job for a sweep who’s done it a few hundred times.

If you’re in Chester and you want a straight answer on whether it’s repairable, call (804) 392-9342 and describe the symptom. If it doesn’t need doing, we’ll tell you that too.
